Li Jinliang — The Heir of a Century-Old Woodcarving Legacy

Li Jinliang, a native of Fujian, China, is the only third-generation inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of wood carving. His ancestors were once royal craftsmen in China’s Qing Dynasty, and the craft has a history of over a century by the time it was passed down to him. He first got involved in his family’s wood carving craft at the age of 12, and now this veteran craftsman is 68 years old, having persisted in making products by hand for more than 50 years. Today, handcrafted wooden combs are gradually being replaced by plastic ones—these harmful items are slowly entering our bodies. However, Chinese wooden combs have a history of hundreds of years; the craft inheritance and production standards of successive dynasties in China have always been rigorous and flawless. Now, he is waiting for the appearance of his “predestined person” (someone who shares a true passion for this craft and is willing to inherit it).
